SINGAPORE: Alfredo Reinado, leader of a breakaway military faction in Timor Leste (East Timor), has vowed to "defend" the people, even as the efforts by Australia-led international troops to capture him intensified on Sunday. There was no authoritative word from the U.N.-mandated force about the reports of a pre-dawn raid on his hideout in Same, south of Dili. According one version, he had "escaped" from the hideout. Earlier, Reinado said, in a video recording, the weapons, which he was accused of stealing from a military camp, "belong to the people." The Government charged him with seizing the weapons in a raid on a military camp last Sunday.
