Staff Reporter

Novel protests mark the occasion on NH 7 and 16

KAMMARPALLY (NIZAMABAD Dt.): The maha dharna of turmeric farmers on NH-7 and NH-16 passing through the district was successful and passed off peacefully on Monday.

Protests went on in a novel way with farmers offering pujas to ploughs and performing Satyanarayana vratam at Bussapur, Perkit and Kammarpally. A number of bullock carts were parked for half-a-km right on NH-16 at Munipally in Armoor mandal blocking the road.

In response to the call given by Swadeshi Jagaran Manch, hundreds of farmers, youths, leaders belonging to Bharatiya Janata Party, Telangana Rashtra Samiti and Rythu Sanghams arrived at main junctions on the two National Highways since morning.

They staged rasta roko at Jakranpally, Munipally, Perkit junction near Armoor, Balkonda, Sone Bridge bordering Adilabad district and Kammarpally.

A number of vehicles were stranded at Jakranpally, Mamidipally, Balkonda and Kammarpally following the maha dharna. APSRTC diverted its bus services to Hyderabad and other places through different routes.

The police arranged an elaborate bandobust .

TRS MLAs Eetela Rajender, E. Ravinder Reddy and Ramalinga Reddy visited the dharna camps.

MSP to farmers

They condemned the alleged callous attitude of the Centre and State Governments in announcing the Minimum Support Price to turmeric. The MLAs called upon the farmers to continue their struggle against the apathy of the powers that be.

VDC issues warning

Meanwhile, the Village Development Committee (VDC) of Ankapur reportedly warned its village farmers against imposing a penalty of Rs.500 on each if he or she did not take part in the dharna. The village known for its progressive farming is the main turmeric-growing centre in Armoor constituency.
