New Delhi: The Supreme Court has dismissed as withdrawn a writ petition to restrain the All-India Medical and Engineering Colleges Association (AIMECA) from conducting a national common entrance test for admission to engineering, medicine and other professional courses. A Bench consisting of Chief Justice K.G. Balakrishnan and Justice D.K. Jain allowed the Association of Managements of Unaided Private Medical and Dental Colleges (AMUPMADC) to withdraw the petition. Even as the AIMECA's petition seeking leave to conduct the test was pending consideration, the AMUPMADC moved the court, asking it not to grant permission. The petitioner said the AIMECA, represented by its president Dr. T.D. Naidu, had no authority to conduct any entrance exam particularly in Maharashtra. No consent letters were obtained from members of the petitioner association for holding a national level test. The petitioner said that it was the sole, duly recognised body to conduct a common entrance test for admission to medical, dental, Ayurvedic and homoeopathic courses.
