Staff Reporter

NALGONDA: In a freak accident, a passenger of the Nagarjuna Express died and four others sustained injuries after being hit by the bumper of a stationary van at an unmanned level crossing between Madugulapally and Charupally villages in Nalgonda district on Sunday.

The deceased was identified as M. Krishnaiah, 55, of Ashok Nagar in Ranga Reddy district. "Krishnaiah, who sat near the door of a compartment, fell on the track after being hit by the front portion of the four wheeler. He was run over by the train," an eyewitness told reporters. The Railway police shifted the body to the district headquarters hospital in Nalgonda.

The injured were G. Renubabu, (19), of Sontamaganuru in Prakasam district, N. Rama Rao (40) of Otti Cherukuru, T.Venkateswarlu of Lenkala Chinapadu and Ram Mohan Reddy (27) of Pedakakani in Guntur district.

"At least ten others sustained injuries but they preferred to go to Secunderabad for treatment," Aavula Srihari Rao, another commuter, said. The Secunderabad bound train started at Tenali and the accident occurred between the two villages in Tipparthy mandal.

Crossing the track

"I don't know what happened. When the train was speeding past the unmanned level crossing, an object hit my right leg. I sat near the door owing to heavy rush in the train," Renubabu said. The Nalgonda Revenue Divisional Officer R.Hari Singh, who called on the injured at the hospital, said that a van driver had tried to cross the track but he dropped the idea at the last minute and stopped the vehicle close to the tracks. "The bumper of the van had a brush with those who sat near the doors of the compartments," he said adding that efforts were on to locate the van driver.
