Kramnik stops Anand

NEW DELHI: Viswanathan Anand lost to World champion Vladimir Kramnik in the sixth round of the Corus chess tournament at Wijk aan Zee, near Amsterdam, on Friday.

Anand's 53-move loss with black pieces came after Kramnik's bishop pair made the decisive difference as the game headed for a minor-piece endgame. The Russian's extra pawn and the bishop's superiority over the knight made the Indian give up. On the brighter side for Indian fans, Parimarjan Negi (four points) moved to the joint second spot after scoring a comprehensive 33-move victory over John van der Wiel in Group `C'.
