LTTE to pull back from Pannichchankerni

B. Muralidhar Reddy

COLOMBO: Close on the heels of the fall of Vaharai, the LTTE claimed on Friday night that it had "decided to pull back" from its Pannichchankerni position, which is on the access route to Vaharai.

In a statement, the LTTE said people in Vaharai, residents and the displaced, had endured more than six months of denial of humanitarian access. "People have been forced to run around from place to place to avoid indiscriminate artillery shelling by the Sri Lankan military since October.

Ninetythree civilians including several children were killed in November and December in three schools, Kathiraveli, Patchenai, and Vammivedduvan, converted into refugee camps", it said.

It said that just a few days ago three people were killed inside the Vaharai hospital complex where people had taken refuge and complained that repeated call by humanitarian agencies to spare the civilians produced no tangible result.
