Talks positive: N. Korea

P. S. Suryanarayana

SINGAPORE: North Korea on Friday claimed that "a certain agreement" on its nuclear weapons programme had been reached in "direct dialogue" with the U.S. in Berlin earlier this week. There was no confirmation by the U.S. Without giving details, the North Korean Foreign Ministry said the talks between its envoy to the six-party process, Kim Kye-gwan, and U.S. Assistant Secretary of State, Christopher Hill, took place in "a positive and sincere atmosphere" in Berlin from January 16 to 18. Pyongyang emphasised that it "paid attention to the direct dialogue" that was held in "a bid to settle knotty problems in resolving the nuclear issue." The purpose of the six-party talks, hosted by China, is to bring about the de-nuclearisation of the Korean peninsula. Mr. Hill, now in Seoul had earlier said his conversations with Mr. Kim in Berlin were not an exercise in deal-making.
