Gabriele Pauli
Berlin: Edmund Stoiber, the conservative Premier of Bavaria, on Thursday succumbed to calls for his departure, bringing his political career to an abrupt end after an aide snooped into a political rival's private life. Mr Stoiber (65), who has been at the helm of the Bavarian Christian Social Union for almost 14 years, said he would step down as Premier and party chairman in September. In December, Mr Stoiber's problems worsened with reports that an aide had tried to gather compromising details of the private life of his critic Gabriele Pauli. The party rival, often pictured on her motorbike, was among the few to speak out against Mr Stoiber's tightly run leadership. © Guardian Newspapers Limited 2007
