Saddam's execution

Saddam Hussein's execution was a brutal act committed by an imperialist regime having scant respect for the law. It is time to think of ways to evolve a multi-polar world. While I am not a Saddam supporter, I feel the manner in which he was disposed of is a blot on democracy.

M.S.R.A. Srihari,
Khammam

The article "A fact that is conveniently forgotten" (Jan. 2) fixes the U.S. for its dubious role in the Saddam affair. The point that he committed most of his crimes when he was a staunch ally of those who now occupy Iraq is extremely relevant. Criminal justice should fix not only the person who committed a crime but also his accomplices.

Saddam was condemned for massacring 148 of his countrymen. Natural justice demands that someone be made accountable for killing 600,000-plus Iraqis, the people of a sovereign country, and 3,000 American soldiers. George Bush and Tony Blair should apologise for the Iraq misadventure openly. Time will force them to do so on a later date, if not today.

V.S. Samuel,
Haridwar
