MOVING MEDITATION: Swathi Iyengar demonstrating a Tai Chi exercise. Photo: K.V. Srinivasan
CHENNAI : If you think that Tai Chi is an opportunity for elderly people to get some air in the park, and way too sedate for you, perhaps you should talk to Swathi K.R. Iyengar. He is a master in Tai Chi from Hong Kong, and got hooked to this style of movement based in martial arts. He has received a certificate from the Hong Kong Tai Chi Association and won the second best Silver Medal in the 2005 Tai Chi International Competition in Hong Kong. During a demonstration at Fitness One where he will be conducting classes, he said that one needs agility and stamina. "It is all about the mind. Anyone can get the physical aspect. What is important is breathing and emotion. Physiologically, Tai Chi has lots of health benefits too, such as improving posture." This Oriental art form is often known as moving meditation. However, cautions Iyengar, "It is not an overnight solution to anything." Classes are on Mondays and Thursdays between 10-11 a.m. at FitnessOne, Alwarpet, at eight classes per month for Rs 975. Call 24671888 for details.
