CHENNAI : The Indian Coast Guard and the Tree Foundation organised a community interaction programme on November 19 on safety measures in the seas for fishermen of Injambakkam, Pannaiyur and Nainarkuppam. Officials briefed them on the safety measures to be adopted while venturing out to sea. Recently, nearly 66 boats carrying fishermen lost their way as a result of low pressure. Officials spoke about the various methodologies to be adopted to overcome turbulent weather and how to combat difficulties during the monsoon. The Coast Guard is not only responsible for the safety and security of maritime assets, it is also the statutory duty of the force to conduct search and rescue operations, the rationale behind organising the interaction programme launched by Coast Guard Region's (East) headquarters. Tree Foundation, a non-governmental organisation involved in environment education and conservation and community development, joined them in this endeavour. As part of the programme, three teams consisting doctors and paramedics were deputed to fishing hamlets along the coast. More than 1,000 persons were screened and educated about various aspects of security, environment, health and hygiene by the teams, said chairperson Supraja Dharini.
