Federer to meet Nalbandian

SHANGHAI: World No. 1 Roger Federer will open the Masters Cup against defending champion David Nalbandian on Sunday in a rematch of last year's final.

The match is a chance for Federer, who lost an epic five-setter to the Argentine last November while injured, to set an early marker in the tournament for which he is favourite.

Andy Roddick and World No. 4 Ivan Ljubicic have also been drawn in Red Group and will play Sunday's second singles match.

Rafael Nadal will face James Blake in the first Gold Group match on Monday The eight-man season-ending tournament has a round-robin format with the top two players from each group progressing to the semifinals ahead of the November 19 final.

The groupings:

Red Group: Roger Federer (Sui), Ivan Ljubicic (Cro), Andy Roddick (U.S.), David Nalbandian (Arg).

Gold Group: Rafael Nadal (Esp), Nikolay Davydenko (Rus), Tommy Robredo (Esp), James Blake (U.S.).

Opening matches: Nov. 12: Red Group: Federer v Nalbandian; Ljubicic v Roddick. Nov. 13: Gold Group: Nadal v Blake; Davydenko v Robredo. — AFP
