Rohit Binu and Maria triumph

KOCHI: Classmates Rohit Binu Mathew and Maria Rony from Alappuzha bagged the mini cadet boys' and girls' titles in the 55th Kerala State table tennis championship at the Rajiv Gandhi indoor stadium here on Thursday evening.

The two top seeds, products of the Alappuzha YMCA TT Academy and fourth standard students at the Bright Land Junior School, took time to settle down but once they did, they were on a merry roll.

For Rohit, it was his maiden State crown and for Maria, who won ten of the 11 tournaments in the Kerala circuit this season with her attacking game, it was her third State trophy.

The results: Mini cadet boys (Final): Rohit Binu Mathew (Alp) bt Louis Joseph (Ekm) 12-10, 11-6, 11-9.

Semifinals: Rohit bt Anas Irshad (Alp) 11-5, 11-8, 11-8; Louis bt P.Padmanabhan 7-11, 11-9, 11-3, 12-10.

Mini cadet girls' (Final): Maria Rony (Alp) bt Seraha Jacob (Alp) 9-11, 11-7, 11-7, 11-5.

Semifinals: Maria bt Ria Chacko (Ek) 11-9, 11-5, 11-7; Seraha bt Ria Sara Thomas (Ekm) 11-7, 11-3, 11-8.

Match postponed

The final league match of the Kerala State under-17 inter-zone cricket championship, between North and Central, which was scheduled to begin at the St Paul's College Ground here on Thursday has been postponed and shifted to a new venue.

With heavy overnight rain affecting the St Paul's wicket, the match will now begin at the Tripunithura Palace Oval on Monday.

Swimming meet

More than 500 swimmers will take part in the National Masters swimming and diving meet, which begins at the Water Works Swimming pool in Thiruvananthapuram on Friday.

The three-day competition will feature men and women between 25 and 80 years of age taking part in 12 age groups categories.

In swimming, competitions will be conducted in 11 individual events and two relays.

The Indian team for the World Masters meet to be held in Australia will be chosen from this meet.

U-13 selection trials

The trials to select the Thrissur District under-13 cricket team will be held at the Thope Stadium here at 9 a.m. on November 11.

Interested players, born on or after September 1, 1993, are to report at the venue in whites and with their own kit.

AG TN posts win

AG (Tamil Nadu) defeated AG (Andhra Pradesh) 25-15, 25-20, 25-23 in the semifinals of the South Zone Indian Audit and Accounts Department volleyball tournament in Chennai on Thursday. — Principal Correspondent
