Mumbai season from November 19

Mumbai: The 45-day Mumbai racing season will commence on Nov. 19 and go on till April 29. There will be 40 Club race days and 5 special race days. More than 1,000 horses (including 360 two-year-olds) will take part during the season. The total stakes money is about Rs. 9.2 crores.

The Vivek Jain led Marketing & Media Committee has garnered maximum number of sponsors for this season.

Unlike last season almost every race day is sponsored and all the five main classic events are sponsored this year.

Following are the five classics: 1. Deutsche Bank Indian 1000 Guineas (Dec.10), 2. Johnnie Walker Indian 2000 Guineas (Dec. 24), 3. Dheeraj Arma Indian Oaks (Jan. 21), 4. McDowell Indian Derby (Feb. 4) and 5. Panchshil Indian St.Leger (March 25).

Meanwhile, preparations for the RWITC Committee Elections, to be held on Dec. 21 have already begun.

UB Group Chairman Vijay Mallya, Mr. Ravi Ghai, Mr. Arun Nanda, former chairman of RWITC K. N. Dhunjibhoy, Mr. Sunil Jhangiani, Mr. Shyam Ruia and Mr. Vijay Shirke will be contesting against the incumbent committee led by Dr. Cyrus Poonawalla and comprising Mr. Vivek Jain, Mr. Champaklal Zaveri, Mr. Shivlal Daga and the past chairman of the Club and Mr. Vivek Jain's father Dr. S. C. Jain.

Horses to follow: Accessible, Ancient Princess, Annot, Almandine, Atmosphere, Barbados Skies.
