NEW DELHI: The Election Commission of India on Tuesday fixed December 4 for the byelections in Karimnagar and Bobbili Lok Sabha constituencies in Andhra Pradesh. The Karimnagar seat has been vacated by TRS chief K Chandrasekhara Rao following differences with the UPA over the Telangana issue. The Bobbili seat has fallen vacant following the death of sitting TDP member Pydithalli Naidu, according to PTI. Mr. Rao, who quit as Union Labour Minister sometime ago, had already announced that he would contest from the seat.
Major players
Special Correspondent in Hyderabad writes: Political heat is bound to pick up in Karimnagar with the announcement of the election schedule. Major players in the political arena-- the Congress, the TDP, the TRS and the BJP-- have already announced their candidates. T. Jeevan Reddy, Jagityal MLA, is the ruling party nominee while the TDP has decided to field L. Ramana, a former Minister. The TRS chief himself is in the fray in the four-cornered contest along with Ch.Vidyasagar Rao of the BJP. While all parties are sounding confident about their victory, the TRS is banking on the Telangana sentiment for vanquishing others. It hopes to upstage others by making the election a referendum on Telangana even as the others rule out the argument as opportunistic. In the last elections, Mr. Chandrasekhar Rao defeated BJP candidate Vidyasagar Rao by a margin of 1,31,168 votes with the support of the Congress. The latter was an ally of the TDP. Now both the TRS and the BJP have fallen out with their major poll partners and are in the fray using Telangana plank. In Bobbili TDP candidate had defeated Bothsa Jhansi of the Congress with a margin of 31,348 in last elections. Later, Ms.Jhansi was elected ZP chairperson and her husband B.Satyanarayana, who is the Minister of Marketing, is once again seeking the ticket for her, it is learnt.
