NO MORE CONGESTION: A view of the Palakkarai road overbridge in Tiruchi. Photo: M. Moorthy
TIRUCHI: The Chief Minister, M.Karunanidhi, will formally declare open the Palakkarai Road overbridge here on Saturday. It will bring to an end the five-year ordeal of residents, consequent to the closure of the Palakkarai Main Road, and relieve traffic congestion on other parts of the city. The T-shaped bridge, sanctioned at a cost of Rs.16 crore, connects Bheema Nagar with Palakarrai over the railway level crossing on Heber Road and extends across the Uyyakondan river. The bridge was partially opened for traffic on a trial basis recently on the Bheema Nagar side even while work was apace on the other section over the river. The Collector, Ashish Vachhani, on Tuesday told mediapersons that civil works on the bridge, with 50 spans running for a total distance of about 900 metres, had been completed. However, the bridge would be fully opened for traffic 15 days after the formal inauguration, as the decks across the Uyyakondan river were laid only a few days back. The time gap was required to allow the mandatory curing and testing process, he said. Dole scheme Mr. Karunanidhi will launch the Unemployment Assistance Scheme here on the same day. Elaborate arrangements have been made in view of a huge number of beneficiaries set to get orders. About 16,000 applications have been received in the district. The eligible persons have been issued invitation cards or provisional sanction letters. Special buses will be operated from various parts, including the Chathram and Central bus stands, to the Anna Stadium, the venue of the function. The shuttle services will be operated from noon to 2 p.m. Beneficiaries should assemble at the venue before 2.30 p.m. for the identity verification process.
