Priyanka in lead

Arvind Aaron

Chennai: Priyanka Kumari of Jharkhand took lead when she won a bishop with a knight fork to defeat A. Gouthami of Andhra in the sixth round of the National Under-11 chess championship being played at the Sri Ramachandra Medical College, here on Tuesday. Priyanka Kumari leads the girls' section with six points. She is one point ahead of the rest in the 101-player girls field.

A. Gouthami thought if she exchanged all the material it would help her make a draw. In her haste, she overlooked a knight fork by Priyanka and lost a bishop and the game in 38 moves.

Michelle Catherina, N.Srinidhi (TN) and Mahaswetha Kumar (Ass) share the second spot on five points.

Yashas, a sixth standard student from Vasavi Vidyalaya, Shimoga, moved to joint lead along with top seed Sahaj Grover of Delhi in the boys' section. Both logged six points.

Trained by Sri Krishna Udupa, Yashas went for an attack and ended up winning a rook for a knight against Shardul Gagare of Maharashtra in 39 moves. Sahaj Grover prevailed winning a pawn early and later added an exchange to defeat Fenil Shah of Gujarat.

Two players, Dheeraj Kumar (AP) and Vian D'Cunha (Kar) are tied for the third place with 5.5 points in the 212-player boys section.
