Largely peaceful in central districts

Thuvakkudi and Jayamkondam go to polls as municipalities

TIRUCHI: Barring an odd incident of a car of an All-India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) candidate catching fire in the city, and a brief road-roko by voters at Thuvarankurichi, protesting alleged high-handed attitude of security personnel, polling was incident-free in the central districts of the State.

Polling was brisk in the Tiruchi Corporation, 11 municipalities, 26 town panchayats, 39 panchayat unions and all village panchayats, which went to polls in the second phase of the elections in Tiruchi, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam, Karur, Pudukottai and Perambalur districts on Sunday.

Thuvakkudi in Tiruchi district and Jayamkondam in Perambalur district went to polls for the first time as municipalities.

While Pudukottai and Perambalur districts registered 70 per cent polling each, Tiruchi and Nagapattinam districts registered 65 each, Thanjavur 60 and Tiruvarur 61 per cent.

The 60 wards of the Tiruchi Corporation recorded 60 per cent polling.

The AIADMK candidate for ward No. 57 of the Corporation, R. Vanitha, had parked her car near a polling booth at Woraiyur, when it suddenly caught fire. After Ms. Vanitha resorted to a road-roko, the police registered the case as `accidental fire.'
