11.67 lakh voters to exercise franchise in second phase

ERODE: The second and final phase of election for local bodies will be conducted on Sunday. In Erode district, 11.67 lakh voters will exercise their franchise on Sunday.

Voters in 10 panchayat unions, 193 village panchayats, 13 district panchayat councils, 39 town panchayats, three municipalities and four grade three municipalities will cast their votes.

There are 5,50,239 voters (2,75,634 men and 2,74,605 women) in village panchayats, 3,14,781 voters (1,56,312 men and 1,58,469 women) in town panchayats, 1,41,936 (71377 men and 70,559 women) voters in Kasipalayam, Surampatty, Periyasemur and Veerappanchatram grade three municipalities and 1,60,919 voters (79,429 men and 81,490 women) will cast votes in three municipalities of Erode, Bhavani and Gobichettipalayam.

102 wards

There are 102 wards in the three municipalities for which 494 candidates are in the fray. Of this, the DMK is contesting in 60 seats, Congress - 26, PMK - 10, CPM - two, CPI - five, AIADMK - 91, MDMK - 11 and Independents and others - 289.

In the grade three municipalities for the 78 posts, 427 candidates are contesting. Of this, the DMK is contesting in 46 seats, Congress - 16, PMK - 6, CPM - 10, CPI - 2, AIADMK - 68, MDMK - 11 and remaining Independents.

A total of 2,048 candidates are contesting for the 585 posts in 39 town panchayats. Of this, the DMK is contesting in 281 seats, Congress - 102, PMK - 39, CPM - 22, CPI - 19, BJP - 22, AIADMK - 360, MDMK - 38 and remaining Independents.

A total of 2,070 polling booths have been arranged for the second phase of polling. A total of 14,428 polling personnel have been deputed for election duty.
