Sterling show by Santosh

D. Ravi Shankar

Calangute (Goa): Goa's H. Santosh put up a sterling show to beat Kinley Gyeltshen of Bhutan and enter the flyweight semifinal in the 2nd Asian junior boxing championship here on Wednesday.

Santosh displayed some fast footwork and opened up a six point lead in the first round. In the second round the Bhutanese boxer was on the backfoot and after a hook to the head took the mandatory count of eight before resuming the bout. The third round saw Santosh swell his points and after a lead of over 20 points the referee stopped the contest in the third round. Santosh will run into Tokuauev of Kazakhistan who beat E. Iderkhou of Mongolia on points.

Sri Lanka's M.K.A. Sanjeeva was lightning fast with his jabs and straight rights to intimidate his rival from Japan, Kenji Kobayashi. The Japanese however, showed fighting spirit and did not allow Sanjeeva to run away with the contest. Sanjeeva ultimately won 25-11.

Iran's Akbari was spot on for the second day in succession as he toyed with Kam Witong of China Macau. Akbari started slowly but in the second and third rounds sped to a more than 20 point lead and the referee stopped the contest in the third round.

India's Dilbagh Singh in the lightweight section was a fighting loser to Yegizekov of Kazakhistan. Gaining a four point lead in the first round Dilbagh was surprised by Yegizekov's resilience. The Kazakh boxer fought hard and fast and took the lead in the third round and consolidated his position in the fourth.

Sagynnbaev of Kyrgyzstan was too good for Japan's Yasuhiro Suzuki winning by a 14 point cushion.

Boxer missing

There was some drama and tension in the contest as Malaysia's Mohd Zaida went missing from 5 a.m. after his morning run. He did not report for his bout and gave a walk-over to Muhammad Ridhwan Bin Ahmed. A police complaint has been lodged to trace the missing boxer.
