Tuticorin: The 19th annual SPIC Trophy FIDE-rated open chess tournament ended on a high note on Sunday with Dusthagir Ibrahim of Madurai, who won the title in the 10th and the penultimate round itself, losing to defending champion S. Nitin of Salem. The final standings: 1-2: M. Dusthagir Ibrahim (Mdu), D.P. Singh (Jharkand) 9 points. 3-5: P. Phoobalan (SRM), R.R. Laxman (Che), S. Nitin (Slm) 8.5. 11th round results: S. Solaikannan triumphs
At Madurai, Solaikannan of ICICI Bank and K. Seethalakshmi won the men's and women's under-25 titles respectively in the State-level open chess tournament on Sunday. The results: Men: Under-25: 1. K. IOB lifts title
At Karaikudi, Indian Overseas Bank, Chennai, clinched the title defeating Indian Bank, Chennai, 25-18, 28-26, 25-23 in the last match of the five-team league of the State-level invitation volleyball tournament on Saturday. Indian Bank and IOB were tied with seven points (three wins and a loss) each. But IOB emerged winner on quotient and bagged a cash prize of Rs.10,000. Indian Bank was second and was richer by Rs.8,000. In another match, Sports Hostel of Excellence, Chennai, downed Integral Coach Factory, Chennai, 22-25, 25-20, 25-22, 25-21 for its second victory and the two teams finished tied for the third spot with six points (two wins and two losses each). ICF took the third spot on quotient and got Rs.6,000. Sports Hostel of Excellence finished fourth and took home Rs.4,000. Tamil Nadu Special Police, which finished last losing all its four matches, got Rs.2,000.
Hariharan is the best
At Tiruchendur, R. Hariharan of KSR Engineering College, Tiruchengode, won the Anna University inter-zone cross country race for men organised by Dr. Sivanthi Adithanar College of Engineering on Sunday. Bala Manikandan of SCAD Engineering College, Cheran Mahadevi, finished second and P. Murugesan of SSM College, Kumarapalayam, finished third. The results: Women: 1. Prasanna Kumari (St. Joseph's CE, Chennai), 2. Mahadevi (Athiyaman EC, Hosur), 3. Maria Theresa (St. Joseph's CE, Chennai).
Majestic CC posts win
At Dindigul, Majestic Cricket club beat Sachin Cricket Club by 22 runs in the Dindigul District Cricket Association first division league on Sunday. The scores: First division: Majestic Cubs CC 173 in 40.5 overs (M. Senthil Pandy 34, W.R. Solomn Jeyaseelan four for 18) bt Sachin CC 151 in 30.1 overs (V. Gopal 92, P. Lenin four for 26). Second division: National CC 96 in 21.2 overs (G. Murugasan three for 24) lost to Mansur youngsters CC 99 for two in 10.3 overs (T. Prabu Vishwanath 41 not out). Third division: Eleven Star CC 144 for eight in 25 overs (Arun Chinnappa 36) bt Gordon CC 122 for nine in 25 overs (S. Chandran five for 22).
