CHENNAI: A Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) circular seeking to deduct eight days' salary of employees who struck work for two days has been stayed by the Madras High Court. Justice P. Jyothimani granted the interim relief when advocate N.G.R. Prasad mentioned the matter and sought urgent hearing of the petition filed by the Petroleum Employees Union and D. Vasudevan on Monday. The matter was then adjourned to Tuesday for further proceedings. The petitioners said the workmen were forced to go on strike on September 19 and 20 as the management did not agree for a parity of productivity-linked incentive scheme between workers and the managerial staff. Claiming that the strike went off peacefully, they said the management issued the impugned circular on September 18, stating that they would deduct wages on the principle of `no work no pay' for the days of strike and also impose penal wage deduction at the rate of four-day wages for each day of the strike. Describing the circular as vindictive, the petitioners said the management was trying to create a rift between workers and officers. Also, against the practice of deducting wages in the following month's salary it decided to deduct in the current month wages.
