Provide quota, Dalit leader urges British investors

Hasan Suroor

Meets officials to discuss rights violations

LONDON : All-India Confederation of SC/ST Organisations president Udit Raj has urged British investors in India to provide reservation for Dalits.

Dr. Raj, who met MPs Jeremy Corbyn and Rob Marris, said he had requested them to take up the issue with their Government.

"Since Mr. Corbyn and Mr. Marris are on the select committee of Parliament dealing with foreign investment, we have requested them to pursue this issue," he said in a statement.

Dr. Raj and other rights activists also met officials of the European Commission and European Council to discuss rights "violations" in India.

"Western countries' governments, NGOs and human rights activists have failed to understand the caste system in India, and whatever resources and help are rendered to India through them, they are not reaching Dalits. Rosemary Morris of Dalit Freedom Network was astonished to learn that the so-called upper castes are getting a lot of governmental and non- governmental help on behalf of Dalits, but Dalits are not even aware of that."

She pledged that she would fight until Europeans understood caste discrimination in India and would see that aid went to needy Dalits and deprived people, Dr. Raj said.
