Nihal scripts a remarkable comeback

CHENNAI: V. Sudharsan failed to put away one of the easiest of overhead shots and paid a heavy price for the folly in the boys' first round of the Wilson-TTT ITF U-18 tournament at the Triangle Tennis Trust, YMCA College of Physical Education here on Monday.

Leading 5-0 in the third set and one point away from wrapping up the match against qualifier Nihal Kapoor, Sudharsan crashed the shot into the net. A dramatic turnaround happened and Nihal eventually won 4-6, 6-0, 7-6(4).

Sixteen-year-old Sriram Balaji overcame a spirited challenge from Abhijit Tiwari to win 7-6(6), 7-5 to enter the second round.

Reigning junior National champion Akash Wagh and Parija Maloo are seeded No. 1 in the boys' and girls' sections respectively. In a draw of 48, all the top 16 players received a bye in the first round.
