Goldsmith ends life, freak death for another

TIRUPATI: Two persons died on the spot and one is battling for life in a freak incident here on Thursday. Owing to business losses, Subramanyam Achari (45), a goldsmith, decided to commit suicide by mixing cyanide in liquor he was consuming at a party along with Jagannatham Achari (47), also a goldsmith, Babu, a painter, and two others — Thota Ramu and Ravi. Subramanyam quietly mixed the cyanide and consumed it, an unsuspecting Babu poured the remaining content and drank it. Ravi, who also consumed a little from the same bottle, is serious. - Staff Reporter

Srikakulam: Madras Telugu Academy is organising `Paadana Telugu Paata' programme here on September 8,9 and 10 to encourage upcoming singers.

According to T.V.K. Sastry of the academy, the idea is to popularise the Telugu song in all its glory and bring out the latent talent in promising singers. The programme is meant for signers in the districts of Srikakulam,Vizianagaram and Visakhapatnam. -Special Correspondent

VISAKHAPATNAM: Applications have been invited for entrance test to admit students to standard sixth in the Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya, Peddapuram (East Godavari).

The test will be conducted on February 11, 2007 at 34 centres in East Godavari district.

Applications from those who have passed fifth standard during 2006-07 have to be submitted by October 31. - Staff Reporter

Temple burgled

KURNOOL: Miscreants broke into Sri Sivasai Ramalayam at Weaker Sections Colony here on Wednesday night. According to reports, they entered the temple by breaking the lock and took away silver crown of Saibaba, "hundi" and other valuables of the temple. Japanese aid for

GDP modernisation

KURNOOL: The modernisation of Gajuladinne Project (GDP) will be taken up under Japanese Bank for International Cooperation (JBIC) at a cost of Rs 25.14 crores. Modernisation includes strengthening of reservoir bunds and lining of canals. The GDP has an ayacut of 31,000 acres during rabi season but only 17,000 acres was supplied water. This year the situation was much worse as only 0.65 tmcft was collected in the reservoir as against full level of 4 tmcft. - Staff Reporter

Principal mourned

KADAPA: Teachers and students of Andhra Pradesh residential school at Brahmamgari Matham on Thursday mourned school principal P. Koti Rama Rao, who was among four persons of a marriage party killed in an accident at Nandalur on Wednesday night. Teachers and students recalled Rama Rao's efforts to develop the school, imbue discipline among students and promotion of sports. They lamented that he also lost his son in the mishap.

LPG godown burgled

KURNOOL: An unidentified gang broke into an LPG refills godown at Pathikonda and took away 56 empty refills on Tuesday night. Similar thefts occurred at Gonegandla, Veldurthi and other places in the district in the past few weeks. According to reports, a particular gang was responsible for the theft of empty cylinders in the district.

Superintendent of

mandal office convicted

Hyderabad: A special court at Nellore has sentenced C. Subbarayudu, superintendent of Chapadu Mandal Revenue Office in Cudapah district, to undergo one-year rigorous imprisonment in a corruption case. The ACB officials arrested him seven years ago on charge of accepting Rs. 500 bribe from a person and subsequently the special court convicted him, a press release said.

A Junior Assistant working in the same office, P. Subbarayudu, was also sentenced to undergo one-year rigorous imprisonment.

Science centre to conduct competitions

TIRUPATI: Commemorating the birth anniversary of renowned engineer Sir Mokshagundam Visweswaraiah, that is observed on September15, the Regional Science Centre and the local centre of Institution of Engineers will be jointly organising a seminar for college students on `Role of engineers in natural disaster mitigation and management' at the RSC premises on Saturday.

For school students, a painting contest will be conducted on Sunday, followed by a family quiz in which two members of a family can take part. RSC Project coordinator K.Madan Gopal has appealed to the visitors to avail the TTD's free bus operated from the Central bus station at 7.30 am, 8.30 am, 10 am, 2.30 pm, 3 pm and 4 pm.
