Ambattur municipality gets spanking new building

Stalin inaugurates Rs.2.13 crore structure

CHENNAI : Local Administration Minister M.K. Stalin inaugurated Ambattur Municipality's new building on Friday amidst great fanfare.

The building, spread over 35,000 sq.ft., and built at a cost of Rs.2.13 crore, adorned a festive look thronged with people who participated in the ceremony. The Ambattur municipality now has the largest office building among the local bodies of the state. With lawns added for greenery, the new office building will house five departments of the municipality.

At the inauguration, about 1,670 self-help groups in tsunami-affected areas of Minjur and Gummidipoondi were provided with revolving fund by the Minister. Mr. Stalin also distributed land documents to 23 Adidravidas of Thiruttani circle. Other welfare schemes provided included old age pension to 20 elderly persons of Ambattur and marriage assistance to 4 persons.

Mr. Stalin said Tamil Nadu Drainage Board was drawing up estimates for adequate water supply to 36 wards of Ambattur Municipality, which were given tanker water supply. The local body would be provided with solid waste management scheme at a cost of Rs.4.24 crore soon.

Union Minister of State for Railways, R. Velu, said the local body, which was upgraded in 1971, had obtained a new building after three decades. He promised to give orders to repair the Ambattur level crossing gate and construction of a subway. Ambattur railway station was one of the about 500 railway stations in the country chosen for modernisation.

The Minister for Fisheries, K.P.P. Swamy said several of the about 3,000 SHGs of tsunami affected areas in Ponneri and Gummidipoondi were provided with revolving fund and loans for rehabilitation. About the schemes for fishermen community, he said that a bridge worth Rs.10 crore benefiting 12 villages in Ponneri taluk would be constructed.

Speakers including the North Chennai M.P. C. Kuppusamy, Sriperumbudur MP A. Krishnasamy, MLAs D. Sudarsanam and B. Ranganathan, highlighted the lack of basic facilities in the Ambattur Municipality and demanded measures to upgrade amenities.

Thiruvallur Collector Ranvir Prasad underlined the various welfare schemes provided to the people, including financial assistance to about 250 physically disabled persons in Gummidipoondi.

Thiruvallur MLA EAP Sivaji, Ambattur municipal councillors and officials including municipal commissioner, V. Chakrapani participated. However, the municipal chairman K. Rukmangathan was not present.
