Special police team zeroes in on conmen, recovers cash

CHENNAI : A gang of confidence tricksters, allegedly involved in a series of heists, was busted here on Thursday with the help of a bank surveillance camera.

Police said they had arrested six of the 10-member gang and recovered Rs 1.24 lakh cash and a laptop from them.

Police formed a special team to arrest the conmen following the registration of four cases in which the victims lost Rs 6 lakh during the last three weeks in Anna Nagar and Thirumangalam.

The conmen's modus operandi: two of them on a motorcycle would stop the victims while they were driving and alert them to what they claimed was an oil leak from the car. When the victims stopped and got down to check, the thieves would make off with cash and other valuables lifted from the vehicle.

Given the same modus operandi and the fact that the victims had seen the offenders, the police showed the victims portraits of habitual offenders. Based on the description, the team increased surveillance in and near the banks.

A closed circuit television (CCTV) installed in one bank provided the break. When the victims were withdrawing money across the cash counter, the conmen watching them were caught by the surveillance camera. The pictures with the team and that in the CCTV matched.

After that it was only a matter of time before the gang was busted, DCP (Anna Nagar) Balasubramaniam told The Hindu .

The gang of 10 persons were all in the age group of 19-27 years. Police said the six arrested were Varahan Moorthy alias Moorthy (24), Praveen Reddy (24), Rajkumar (24), Arun Kumar (27), Varun Kumar (19) and Salaiah. Police said the youths dressed well and some of them were fluent in more than three languages. One had studied hotel management, and another had conducted his wedding reception in Hyderabad in a grand manner, an investigating officer said.

A senior officer said the gang had committed similar crimes in Hyderabad and Tirupur in Tamil Nadu and other cities.

During the investigation, it also came to light that they owned a palatial bungalow in Rajamangalam, a suburb near here.

Though the cash lost by the victims was around Rs six lakh, police have so far recovered only Rs 1.24 lakh. Once the other four are apprehended, it is expected the lost money would also be recovered.

After registering cases against the six, they were remanded to custody.
