VIRUDHUNAGAR : The Tamil Nadu Vivasayigal Sangam has sought action against those trying to grab the land of small farmers in some villages near Sattur. The issue was brought to the notice of District Revenue Officer R. Nandagopal, who immediately directed the District Registrar not to entertain bulk registration of land in the area. The association district secretary, A. Vijayamurugan, said some people belonging to other States were enticing small and poor farmers into selling their land on the promise of giving the farmland back to them at a later date. The brokers employed by unnamed persons had got power of attorney from the farmers in Kottur, Maruloothu, Avudaiyapuram and other villages and registered them at the Sub-Registrar offices in Virudhunagar and Sattur. "The farmers were paid a paltry sum in the range of Rs. 2,000 to Rs. 5,000 an acre. The farmers were made to believe that the registration was just a formality and they could continue to enjoy all rights over their land," Mr. Vijayamurugan said. Though the motive behind the land grabbing is not known, Mr. Vijayamurugan suspects that the grabbers wanted to buy land in the area as its value was expected to go up after implementation of Sethusamudram Ship Channel Project. The District Revenue Officer has also asked the officials of Registration Department to look for suspicious people who come to register land. "The Revenue Department is not aware of any such activity. It will come to our knowledge only when the buyer seeks name change in patta," Mr. Nandagopal said.
