COMMEMORATING FREEDOM STRUGGLE: Freedom fighters taking out a procession in Mysore on Wednesday to mark the Quit India movement. PHOTO: M.A. SRIRAM
MYSORE: Freedom fighters took out a procession here on Wednesday to mark the Quit India movement. Members of the Mysore City and District Freedom Fighters' Association participated in the procession. Schoolchildren, and Scouts and Guides joined them. The tricolour was hoisted at the Subarayanakere Ground, which was "Ground Zero" in Mysore during the Quit India movement. On August 9 and 10, 1942, Mysore saw the convergence of leaders such as Sahukar Channayya, H.C. Dasappa, Agaram Rangaiah, A.N. Suryanarayan Rao, Palahalli Sitaramayya, M.N. Jois, and Tagadur Ramachandra among others. The news of Gandhiji's arrest reached the city late on August 9 and a meeting was held at the Maharaja's College where writer Sriranga addressed a large gathering. On August 10, students assembled at the Subbarayanakere Ground to lend support to the movement. Students resorted to boycott of schools and colleges and K.R. Mills workers launched a strike and took out a procession. Similar reports of agitation emerged from Hunsur, K.R. Nagar, Chunchunkatte and Chamarajanagar, while the temple town of Nanjangud came into picture on August 11. The agitation continued and more than 10,000 people attended a rally on August 12. The Maharaja's College hostel was renamed as "Swarajya Bhavan" and became the headquarters from where the Quit India movement was controlled in Mysore district.
