MCH wins award for best practices

Civic body's e-initiative earlier won the Centre's `Golden Icon' award

HYDERABAD: Municipal Corporation of Hyderabad's Information Technology and e-Governance initiatives have earned another plaudit by winning the `Manthan-American India Foundation Award' for best practices in e-content and creativity.

The Digital Empowerment Foundation in partnership with the World Summit Award and the American India Foundation launched the award (www.manthanaward) in 2004. MCH's `Hyderabad First' won the award - competing against 35 other organisations.

Announcing this on Monday, Mayor Teegala Krishna Reddy and Commissioner Sanjay Jaju said the prize was given away on August 5 in New Delhi at the first international conference on e-content and sustainability & Manthan-AIF Award 2006. However, because of rains the duo could not make it to the national capital to receive it.

Sole entry

"We are proud of having a dynamic website where we attended to 18,000 grievances of the 21,000 received through the net," said Mr. Jaju, explaining that the latest award will be the country's sole official entry into the World Info Society competition.

The Commissioner also expressed happiness over the declaration of sister city affiliation between Hyderabad and Miyoshi of Hiroshima. The agreement was signed by the Mayor and Miyoshi Mayor Hirokoji Yoshioka, during his visit to Japan last month.

Mr. Krishna Reddy said he was impressed with the garbage disposal and water treatment plants there and felt it was worth emulating. "After sifting out the useful and recyclable material, the rest of the garbage is burnt as there is no land available for landfills," he said.

The Mayor was given the honorary citizenship of Miyoshi. Asa Bhanu Japan Centre, which facilitated the visit, also presented him with the `Maitree Award'. Both Mayors called for continued cultural and friendly ties. A message from Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy was also presented to Hiroshima Governor Yuzan Fujita.

Noted dancer Deepika Reddy presented Kuchipudi dance while the visitors were treated to traditional Japanese art forms - including the `Kagura' dance.
