State signs Rs. 540-crore loan pact with World Bank

BANGALORE:
The State Government on Monday signed a Rs. 540-crore loan agreement with World Bank for assisting Karnataka Panchayat Strengthening Project, which will provide basic facilities for people living in gram panchayats in the 39 taluks of the State.
The project, to be implemented over the next five years, is aimed at improving delivery of public services by the gram panchayats.
Under the project, each gram panchayat in 39 most backward taluks will get an additional assistance of Rs. 5 lakh a year. Under the project, financial assistance will be given for capacity building of the Abdul Nazir Sab State Institute of Rural Development, Mysore.
According to the High Powered Committee for Redressal of Regional Imbalances, there are 21 most backward taluks in Gulbarga district, five in Belgaum district and two in Mysore districts.
Under the project, the gram panchayats will be given untied funds for taking up works related to roads, bridges, schools, water supply, toilets and primary health centres.
