Internet Service Providers restore access to blog-hosting sites in a phased manner

CHENNAI: With Internet Service Providers restoring access to blog-hosting sites Blogspot.com and Typepad.com in a phased manner since Saturday, bloggers, who maintain online journals, are now able to access, edit and post new entries.

Airtel broadband users and Reliance Web World users said they were able to access blogspot.com since Saturday night.

Following the public outcry over the blocking of the blog-hosting domains last week, the Department of Telecommunications had asked ISPs to explain why entire domains were targeted when it had demanded the blocking of only 17 specific websites and pages of blogsites.

Circular hosted

A circular hosted on the Press Information Bureau website (http://pib.nic.in) reads: "The Department of Telecom (DoT) has instructed all Internet Service Providers (ISPs) in the country to block only the specified website/webpages on the parent website. The DoT, in its letter issued to all the ISPs, has mentioned that it had come to notice that in some cases the parent website had been blocked in contravention to what was stated in its earlier order dated 13th July 2006 whereby it ordered the ISPs to block certain websites/webpages.

"As such the DoT has now directed all the ISPs to strictly comply with the order dated July 13, and provide unhindered access to the Internet except for the websites/webpages which have been specifically mentioned in its orders issued from time to time."

Chennai has a strong community of bloggers, especially among its young executives and students, who regularly post logs on their online journals. They had strongly condemned the blockage of blogspot.com and typepad.com.
