Peter takes title

MADURAI: John Peter of Southern Railway and Billiards Kingdom's Kaja beat J.V.S.M.R. Janardhanan (Union Club) 41-52, 42-32, 64-10, 54-32, 68-20 and Sunder (Billiards Kingdom) 20-61, 42-53, 40-32, 66-23, 66-28 respectively for their second wins in the semifinal round-robin league in the city open snooker tournament which concluded here on Sunday.

Peter and Kaja were tied for the top spot, but the former clinched the title on better frame difference. Earlier results: John Peter bt Sunder 70-56, 42-44, 66-53, 71-43; V.S.M.R. Janardhanan bt Kaja 32-72, 32-19, 63-54, 61-40, 54-39; Sunder bt Janardhanan 66-33, 82-45, 62-46; Kaja bt John Peter 57-47, 26-16, 56-37, 37-49, 51-35.

Silambarasan triumphs

S. Silambarasan (Vaniyambadi) and A.V. Shameem Fathima (Guntur Subbiah Pillai GHS) won the junior boys' and girls' titles in the Tamil Nadu State tennikoit championship in Chennai on Sunday.

K. Tamil Selvan, associate secretary, Tamil Nadu State Volleyball Association, gave away the prizes.

Junior boys: S. Silambarasan (Vaniyambadi); sub-juniors: Arivazhagan (Vaniyampadi); junior girls: A.V. Shameem Fathima (Guntur Subbiah); sub-juniors: B. Madhu Bala (Sivasaki).

Tiruvallur in last four

Tiruvallur DCA got the better of Coimbatore DCA by four wickets and entered the semifinal of the TNCA inter district under-22 cricket tournament at the Neelambal School grounds in Salem on Saturday.

The scores: Coimbatore DCA 190 in 49.5 overs (Hariprasath 40) lost to Tiruvallur DCA 191 for six in 39.2 overs (Petson Mathews 66).

Chess tournament

Book short-listed

The International Bridge Press Association (IBPA) bulletin reports that R. Jayaram's "Serendipity in Bridge," published earlier this year in USA, is one of the six books short-listed for the 2006 Master Point Press IBPA Book of the Year award. The other contenders are the Englishman, Julian Pottage, who won the same award in 2004, the prolific writer in bridge from Australia, Ron Klinger, the German Sabine Aukin, arguably the best woman player in the World today, a Polish and a Canadian. The winner, to be decided by an international jury, headed by Barry Rigal of the U.S. will be announced during the European championships in Warsaw in August.
