KANCHEEPURAM: Local body elections in the State are likely to be held in two phases, according to State Election Commissioner D. Chandrasekaran. Talking to reporters here on Saturday, the SEC said the Commission was seriously pursuing the idea to conduct local body elections in two phases in view of the large number of posts for which they were to be conducted. About 1.40 lakh posts in institutions such as village panchayat, panchayat unions, district panchayat councils, special village panchayats, municipalities and corporations were to be filled. There are 12,618 village panchayats, 385 panchayat unions, 551 special village panchayats, 50 third-grade municipalities, 102 municipalities and six corporations in the State. He said the electoral rolls used for conducting the Assembly polls, with January 1, 2006 as cut off date for becoming a voter, would be used as the base for preparing ward-level voter list for civic body elections. However, steps would be initiated to include left out names provided such claims were genuine. Kancheepuram Collector Pradeep Yadav, and SEC secretary S. Thangaswamy, participated in the review meeting.
