Sonia convenes CWC meet
K.V. Prasad
NEW DELHI:
Congress president Sonia Gandhi has convened a meeting of the Working Committee here on Thursday to discuss the issue of price rise in the country. Full CWC members and permanent invitees have been asked to attend the meeting. The list does not include Finance Minister P. Chidambaram.
Ms. Gandhi's move comes nearly a fortnight after the Left parties vigorously took up the issue at the Coordination Committee meeting here. Ms. Gandhi too had drawn the attention of the Government while addressing the party in Parliament.
The Government has explained the spurt in prices of essential commodities, especially pulses and vegetables, as a "seasonal'' development. However, adding to its woes is the rising graph of inflation, part of which is being attributed to the rise in the prices of petrol and diesel.
Party spokesperson Rajiv Shukla said that while the Central Government was taking steps required, the State governments too could do their share to reduce the impact.
