Three records broken in sub-junior Nationals

Special Correspondent

KANAKPURA: The ideal swimming conditions at the international-class JIRS pool complex spurred the young ones to produce their best on the opening day of the 23rd sub-junior National aquatics championship which got underway here on Sunday.

Three records were spawned in a card of 10 events which is indeed good going and Karnataka had a lot to cheer about with Arhata Magavi striking a double gold with a new meet mark to boot. Arhata rewrote the 50m butterfly mark in the girls Group 3, with 34.96, which lowered the existing record of 33.07 held by Tagari Baidya of West Bengal. The 11-year-old student from Bangalore, who trains in the BAC pool, also won the 200m freestyle in 2:24.80. The other notable success for Karnataka was Abhinav, who won the 50m butterfly in Group 4.

The meet opened on a record-breaking note with Saurabh Sangvekar winning the 200m freestyle event with a time of 2:17.44. Swaroop Mondal of West Bengal accounted for the other record in the boys' section, winning the 100m breaststroke in Group 3 in 1:18.88. The other record maker in the girls' section was Rujuta Bhat of Maharashtra, who won the 50m butterfly in Group 4.

The result of 50m breaststroke in boys Group IV, which was `won' by Arun of Haryana, was withheld, pending a medical report on the winner's age proof.

Earlier, the meet was inaugurated by Kanakpura MLA P.G.R. Sindhia while Jain Group chairman Chenraj Jain presided over the function.
