Tendulkar to return to action on Wednesday

London: Making a comeback after his shoulder surgery, Sachin Tendulkar will play five matches for Lashing Club XI and the first match is scheduled against Cambridge University Cricket Club at Cambridge on Wednesday.

The Lashings World XI on Sunday announced that Tendulkar would join the side for five ``very special guest appearances'' over the next couple of weeks.

At Lashings, Tendulkar will have teammates in former West Indies captains Richie Richardson and Courtney Walsh, former Sri Lanka skipper Aravinda de Silva, New Zealand's Chris Cairns, former Zimbabwean captain Tatenda Taibu and England's Ashes winning women's team captain Clare Connor.

``This is a great opportunity for me to get back into cricket, to get some batting practice, and to play matches for Lashings World XI that will help to raise money for charity. I get the chance to play alongside internationals players, but not in games where every run counts. There is no pressure and the relaxed environment will be a great way to work on my game and get back to match fitness,'' Tendulkar said.

Lashings World XI chairman David Folb said, ``it is very kind of Sachin to lend us his services whilst he is making his comeback from injury. With India being such a cricketing powerhouse, it is very exciting for us to have one of their biggest stars playing for us, attracting a whole new audience to Lashings' games.

``Sachin Tendulkar's appearance for us, will allow people to come and see one of the world's best ever players in action here in the United Kingdom,'' he added.

Tendulkar will make his first appearance against Cambridge University Cricket Club on Wednesday at Cambridge, followed by matches against Reigate Priory Cricket Club, Surrey (June 25) and Middleton Cricket Club, West Sussex (July 2).

Lashings World XI plays in a six-a-side tournament to raise funds for the charity Sparks at the Bank of England Ground on July 5 and Tendulkar's last match will be against Sutton Valence School, Kent, on July 6. — UNI
