My father spoiled his career, says Kumaraswamy

Special Correspondent

BANGALORE: Karnataka Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy has said that his father H.D. Deve Gowda damaged the development works of the State and spoiled his career by becoming Prime Minister.

"Because of the acceptance of the Prime Minister's post, I think his [Deve Gowda's] political career was spoiled" Mr. Kumaraswamy said in a "Walk the Talk" programme of NDTV on Saturday.

The previous Congress Government failed to implement development works. "If he [Gowda] had continued as Chief Minister, he would have done good development works," he said.

By becoming Prime Minister in 1996 he "damaged the State." "My father was doing wonderful work at that time. The Congress and Left parties drove my father unnecessarily to Delhi politics forcing him to accept the Prime Minister's post.Asked whether Mr. Gowda accepted the JD (S)-BJP alliance, he said, "Mr. Gowda is pleased with the good governance of the coalition government." His father had not accepted the alliance, but he was happy with the functioning of the Government.

"My father is a development-oriented person. He came from a poor family and he always fought for the cause of the poor people. My ambition is to bring back my father to political activities," Mr. Kumaraswamy said.

He said the Government was not against the Bangalore-Mysore Infrastructure Corridor project. But in its name more land was grabbed. "For me, the issue is to develop the State."
