England and Ecuador win
NUREMBERG:
Peter Crouch and Steven Gerrard scored late goals to lead England into the second round of the World Cup with a 2-0 win over Trinidad and Tobago in a Group B match on Thursday.
Crouch headed in a cross from David Beckham in the 83rd minute to give his team the goal it had struggled to score. Gerrard added another in injury time to provide England its second straight win.
England controlled the play for most part, but Crouch and others missed chances in front of the net, raising Trinidad and Tobago's hopes of achieving a 0-0 result.
England striker Wayne Rooney came on as a substitute in the 58th minute, replacing Michael Owen.
Earlier, Ecuador reached the second round for the first time, defeating Costa Rica 3-0 in Hamburg.
Carlos Tenorio and Agustin Delgado scored their second goals of the tournament as Ecuador qualified alongside host Germany from group `A'.
Tenorio scored in the eighth minute and Delgado in the 54th. Kaviedes added the last goal in the second minute of injury time from six yards off a cross from Edison Mendez. AP
