Arab cultural centre for Jamia Millia University

Atul Aneja

DUBAI: Minister for Human Resource Development Arjun Singh announced here on Monday that an Arab cultural centre would be established at the Jamia Millia University in New Delhi.

In an address organised by the Muslim Education Society here, Mr. Singh said the centre would help bring India and Arab countries closer as they shared deep historical ties.

`Minority rights will be protected'

He pointed out that the Government was committed to protecting minority rights, especially in the field of education. It would ensure that the minority status of the Aligarh Muslim University was maintained.

Mr. Singh said Dubai needed more institutes of higher learning as it was host to a million strong Indian population. Buoyed by the development of a Knowledge Village and an Academic City, Dubai had emerged as an education hub in the region, Mr. Singh added.

Arjun Singh returns

UNI reports from New Delhi: Mr. Singh arrived here after a nine-day trip to Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates and was said by an aide to be ``fine.''

A report from Dubai earlier indicated that the Minister was indisposed.
