New Delhi: Dissatisfied with passenger amenities and the level of sanitation at New Delhi and Delhi railway stations, Railway Minister Lalu Prasad has ordered an inquiry into the lapses and asked for improved services.

In a surprise visit to the two stations for a check on amenities provided, "the Minister found bed rolls not clean, tracks not properly maintained and no proper seating arrangements", Railway Ministry officials said.

They said Mr. Prasad checked the pantry cars of some trains at the stations and found that the food served "was not as good as promised."

The Minister ordered an inquiry to fix responsibility and punish those found guilty of the lapses, they said.

Mr. Prasad labelled 2006 as the `Passenger Amenities Year' with the motto of serving the people with a smile. . - PTI
