JERUSALEM: An Indian national, who was promised work as a nursing aide in Israel, was allegedly duped of $10,000 by a job racketeer amid reports of such groups widening their operations in the country. Sukhminder Singh arrived in Israel legally from China on December 31, 2005 after shelling out a hefty amount. According to an affidavit given by Mr. Singh at the Tel Aviv office of an Israeli NGO that helps migrant workers, he gave the money to an Indian citizen here who promised to arrange work for him. The Indian later gave the money to Roni, owner of a manpower firm, said Yuval Livnat, a lawyer representing the NGO. Mr. Singh was taken to the Interior Ministry by Mr. Roni where he was issued a tourist visa and then put in an apartment in another city with four senior citizens to take care of. He was promised a work permit by Mr. Roni in the name of one of the elderly people but was disappointed to get only an extension of his tourist visa after a month. Mr. Singh left his job having understood that he would not get a work permit. Mr. Livnat said the matter was reported to the police. Several such cases have been brought to light in the recent past. Middlemen use the elderly to bring innocent people from abroad for work, only to cheat them later. PTI
