Tirkey in World Cup team

Special Correspondent

KOLKATA: Veteran Muni Ram Tirkey of Services is one of the surprises in the 16-member Indian archery contingent named for the first Meteksan archery World Cup at Porec in Croatia from May 9 to 13.

Tirkey, the 1999 National champion, had found the going tough against a clutch of talented archers over the past three years. He, however, bounced back strongly in the first ranking tournament at Amritsar on May 1.

The tournament served as the first of the six selection trials for the Indian archery team for 2006.

The squad:

Recurve, men: Jayanta Talukdar (Jharkhand), N. Ravindar (AP), M.R. Tirkey and Tarundeep Rai (SSCB).

Women: Reena Kumar, Dola Banerjee (Rlys), Rosy Lalrem (Jhar) and Sushma (UP).

Compound, men: Jayantilal Ninama (Raj), Rajwant Singh (Del), Palton Hansda and Renso Purty (Jhar).

Women: Jhanu Hansda, Manjudha Soy, Sakro Besra (Jhar) and Radha Bai (Chhattisgarh).

Coaches: Recurve: Dharmendra Tiwari (Jhar), Ravi Shankar (SSCB) and Laxmipriya Devi (Goa).

Compound: Harinder Singh (Jhar). Manager: J.P. Jain (Delhi).
