Poll panel lists alternative documents

CHENNAI: Those who have been issued the Electors' Photo Identity Cards (EPIC) must bring them for identification at the time of voting on May 8. However, the Election Commission has listed 13 other documents to enable voters to establish their identity at the polling booths if they have not been issued EPICs.

The alternate documents are: (1) Passports; (2) Driving licences issued up to December 31, 2005; (3) Income Tax identity (PAN) cards; (4) Service identity cards with photo, issued to employees by State/ Central Government, Public Sector Undertakings, Local bodies or Public Limited companies; (5) Passbooks with photo, issued by Public Sector banks/ Post Office and Kisan passbooks (accounts opened on or before December 31, 2005; (6) Student identity cards (with photo) issued by recognised educational institutions on or before December 31, 2005; (7) Ration cards (with photo) printed on or before December 31, 2005; (8) Pension documents with photo such as Ex-Servicemen's pension book/ pension payment order, Ex-Servicemen's widow/ Dependent certificates; (9) Old age pension order, widow pension order with photo issued up to December 31, 2005; (10) Railway identification cards with photo issued before December 31, 2005; (11) Freedom fighter identity cards with photo; (12) Arms licences with photo issued before December 31, 2005; and (13) Identity cards with photo issued by Directorate of Disability (for People with Disability) issued up to December 31, 2005, according to a press release from the Chief Electoral Officer.

Clarification issued

He also clarified that an earlier press release of May 2, had mentioned "Slum Clearance Board allotment" as a document by oversight. "It is clarified that documents such as Slum Clearance Board allotment order, VAO certificate and Community certificate shall not be accepted as identification document on the poll day."

The release also said that some apprehensions had been expressed about the possibility of ration cards being printed and distributed on the eve of elections. "This will be in violation of the model code of conduct. Only ration cards printed on or before December 31, 2005 will be accepted for identification at the time of voting."
