GULBARGA: Members of the students' wing of Dr. Ambedkar Horata Samiti staged a "rasta roko" near the Gulbarga Railway Station for nearly two hours demanding that the State Government name Gulbarga University after Dr. B.R. Ambedkar.
Agitation mode
Dalit organisations in Gulbarga district have been registering their opposition to the proposal of the Government to name Gulbarga University after Basaveshwara, the 12th century social reformer.
Traffic disrupted
Samiti members squatted on the road disrupting the movement of the traffic. In their memorandum addressed to Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy and submitted to the revenue authorities, the samiti said that the announcement by the Chief Minister in Bangalore in this regard had come as a bolt from the blue for Dalits in the State.
Plea to Chief Minister
They had been agitating since the inception of the Gulbarga University 26 years ago for naming it after Dr. B.R. Ambedkar. The samiti appealed to the Chief Minister to review the decision on naming the university after Basaveshwara.
