GULBARGA: The district unit of the Communist Party of India (CPI) has demanded that the Government immediately suspend officials accused of financial irregularities in execution of Bennethora Major Irrigation Project in the district. Shoukat Ali Alur, CPI district secretary, said in a statement here on Thursday that although Water Resources Minister K.S. Eashwarappa had made an announcement regarding the suspension of officials, the orders were yet to be served on them. Mr. Alur said that some of the officials who had been indicted and mentioned in the list of suspended officials a few days ago were relatives of Ministers. They were making efforts to escape punishment. Mr. Eashwarappa should immediately issue orders placing the officials under suspension and launching criminal and civil proceedings against them, he said. Mr. Alur wanted the Government to set up commissions to look into the irregularities in other irrigation projects in the district, including Upper Krishna, Lower Mullamari, and Amarja projects, and punish the guilty.
