Private colleges rule out cut in fees

The managements made known their stand at a meeting

  • The Government wants private colleges to strictly adhere to the admission norms as spelt out by the Supreme Court
  • It wants admissions and fee structure to be as per the apex court guidelines

BANGALORE: Private professional college managements on Saturday ruled out any further reduction of fees, contending that the fee fixed by the Rangavittalachar Committee was so low that it was difficult to run the colleges with that fee structure.

The management representatives made known their stand at a meeting with the government officials concerned here on Saturday. The meeting, described as a preliminary step to know the stand of the Government, focussed on the admission of students to professional courses, particularly medicine, dental and engineering.

The Government told the private colleges that it wanted them to strictly adhere to the admission norms as spelt out by the Supreme Court. It wanted the admissions and the fee charged to be as per the apex court guidelines.

The Government also wanted to know from the colleges the concessions that they could offer to certain category of students. The colleges pointed out that the fees had already been fixed by the Rangavittalachar Committee.

The managements maintained that the fee structure fixed by the panel was neither realistic nor adequate and if they gave any further concessions, it would be very difficult to run the colleges.

However, the managements sought time till Tuesday to come out with their final stand on the matter. The college managements are expected to hold a separate meeting on Monday in this regard.

The Government recently constituted two committees — one each for medical and dental and engineering courses. The panels included management representatives and the department secretaries concerned.
