Bangalore: The States Reorganisation Act, 1956 needs a fresh look to determine whether division on linguistic lines has facilitated development, Union Minister of State for Planning M.V. Rajasekharan said here on Saturday.

He was inaugurating a symposium, "Reorganisation of South Indian States: history and impact", organised by Bangalore University to commemorate the golden jubilee of the reorganisation of States, here on Saturday.

The Minister urged historians to look into the reorganisation of States and suggest steps to correct regional imbalances.

"The poor in most States continue to remain poor though the Government has launched several welfare programmes," he said.

Bangalore University Vice-Chancellor M.S. Thimmappa said activists made use of a sense of deprivation prevalent among the people in unscientifically formed States and Union Territories to build their own identity.

Mr. Rajasekharan felicitated Prof. Thimmappa.

K.K.N. Kurup, former Vice-Chancellor of Calicut University; Y. Vaikuntam, former Vice-Chancellor of Kakatiya University, Warangal; S. Gopalakrishnan, retired professor of history, S.V. University, Tirupati; and N. Rajendran, Director of Centre for History, Bharathidasan University Tiruchi, were present. S. Chandrashekar, director of the symposium, welcomed the gathering.

Shadaksharaiah, local secretary, proposed a vote of thanks.
