ELECTION FEVER: Hoardings and flags of political parties at Goripalayam in Madurai. Photo: S. James
Though Assembly polls are a few months away, the city has started to sport an `election look.' Walls along main roads are garishly painted and some bear hitherto unknown names. There are hoardings everywhere and those put up by the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam greet the party general secretary Jayalalithaa on her 58th birthday, which falls this month. Last week, the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) enthusiasts greeted the son of former Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi, M. K. Alagiri, on his birthday, which fell on January 30. The DMK cadres went a step further on February 2 by painting the city in black and red when party deputy general secretary M.K. Stalin came to address them. A major difference was that the DMK posters carried the photographs of the two brothers, a shift from past practice.
