Manmohan must discuss issue to evolve national consensus
NEW DELHI: Bharatiya Janata Party president Rajnath Singh on Saturday said India's foreign policy concerns were dictated by its own interests and perception of correctness. The underlying message is: what we do on the Iran vote and where we invest in oil are entirely our business, not that of the United States. The BJP said Prime Minister Manmohan Singh should discuss this issue with senior opposition leaders to evolve a national consensus on the country's approach. Mr. Rajnath Singh expressed apprehension that the U.S. was "seeking to cap our nuclear programme" and not allowing India to develop a credible minimum nuclear deterrent. In a statement here, he objected to the "threatening" and "overbearing" tenor of the U.S. Ambassador David Mulford's statements, linking the July 18, 2005 India-U.S. nuclear deal to New Delhi's vote on the Iran nuclear issue. Worse was the more "explicit statement" by Secretary of State Condoleezzaa Rice on the subject, he said. Now reports surfaced on the America's aide memoire objecting to the Indian decision to buy a Syrian oilfield in partnership with China. Mr. Rajnath Singh said Mr. Mulford's statements were "unbecoming of a diplomat" and "an act of discourtesy to the host country."
